2022 Season Ending Report from the Handicap Committee

The role of the Handicap Committee is to ensure that the Handicap Guidelines of Golf Canada and the Golf Association of Ontario (GAO) are followed at Sleepy Hollow, and once again in 2022 the committee members worked together in an attempt to fulfill this assignment.

OUR MEMBERS

The committee consisted of six club members, Susan Rudin, Sharon Gibbs, Florence Marquis, Al Ruebottom, Mike Rinne and Tom Worsley. The Head Pro (or his designate) is also a de-facto member of the committee. Tom Worsley and Sharon Gibbs co-chaired the committee this season.

Susan Rudin, Sharon Gibbs, Al Ruebottom and Mike Rinne will be leaving the group after this season and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their many efforts and contributions.

We can also announce that Judy McDougall will be joining the committee in 2023. We will be looking for at least one additional member to join us for next season.

OUR FUNCTION

The committee met monthly from April to October. An agenda was distributed in advance of each meeting and minutes were taken and maintained.

One of the key functions of the committee is to review that scores are posted regularly and in accordance with the Golf Canada requirements. The purpose of this is to attempt to ensure the integrity of the handicaps of our members.

In late June we received a copy of the entire membership roster, and all of the committee members were involved in verifying the postings made by our members on the Golf Canada website. Our checks revealed that over 80% of our members were posting their scores on a regular basis.
In addition, the committee pulled the list of entrants into the Senior Club Championship, the Match Play categories, the Club Championship and the Derby. In each case we checked to see that all entrants into these competitions had been posting scores and that their handicap could be considered current. The few entrants found not to be in compliance with the established criteria of required postings were identified to the event organizers.

All the scores of the participants in the weekly Tuesday Seniors event (approximately 40 players) were also verified as posted

COMMUNICATION

In 2022, we continued our series of communication pieces entitled “Did You Know” to assist the members with Handicap related topics. The club also created a section on the website where all of our communication items could be found. For 2023 we will be reviewing our communication plan to see if there is anything we may be able to improve upon.

In closing, we would like to extend our appreciation to Kurt Paisley, Adam Craig and Paul Clarke for their support to the committee this season.

Regards,

The 2022 Sleepy Hollow Handicap Committee.
